Bible verse:
Colossians 3:22-24

This week we looked at the workplace and why we consider this to be valuable. We defined the workplace to be anywhere that we work, which includes a place of work which we go to or it may be our homes or it may be a school or university. The three points I covered were:

  1. Work is part of God's perfect creation and part of his perfect plan for us. Work existed before the fall and is one of the ways in which we reflect the image and glory of God.
  2. We looked at the Colossians 3:22-24, which showed us that our inheritance is found in God and we are not working for an earthly reward. We are a people whose value is found in the fact that Jesus died on the cross for us and not in our success at work. We also thought about the mind-sets with which we should approach work being those founded in compassion, kindness, meekness and patience and that we should do our work to the best of our ability
  3. Finally we considered how we could best love and support people in their work.

At the end Paul Harrison drew out the link between Dieks' contribution in worship regarding the power of prayer and the importance of praying for our work.

For discussion:
  1. In Colossians 3:5-16 Paul encourages us to put off a number of earthly mind-sets and put on the mind-sets which reflect God. Why don't you read this list and discuss which you find easier and more difficult. You might want to commit to keeping each other accountable to choosing to live these out everyday.
  2. Spend sometime discussing the ways in which you can support each individual in the small group in both practical ways and how we can help each other keep working with our eternal inheritance in mind.
  3. Pray: for your workplaces and for yourselves that you would reflect the glory of God in your workplaces. Paul's encouragement was to keep praying on a daily basis and expect that stories will come out of this. So keep praying and please share the stories so that God can be glorified and we can all be encouraged.
