The Parable of the Talents

Date of talk:

Simon Halford
Bible verse:
Matthew 25:14-30

On Sunday I took us through Matthew 25:14-30 and the Parable of the Talents.  We looked at how the Kingdom of Heaven is not about us - it is about the King!  This parable is about the master, not which servant we are.  The king entrusts lavishly to us and then when we invest what he’s entrusted to us he rewards us with celebration and honouring, with more responsibility and allows us to enter into his joy.

There is a choice though.  We can also choose to not associate with the king while he is away which will mean that upon his return he would find an empty ledger.  We looked at Jesus’ hard to hear instruction that those upon his return with an empty ledger would have his blessings taken away from them and given to someone else.

For discussion:

After a bit of a catch-up and discussion about what struck people about Sunday’s talk and this passage, let’s use three questions which are good for any Bible study: Up, In and Out.

1.           Up: What does this passage tell us about God?

2.           In: What does this passage tell us about us?

3.           Out: What does this passage tell us about Coventry?

(Try these three questions for yourself on any passage - on your own or in Small Groups.  I find them really helpful!)
