A Commissioning for Creativity

Date of talk:

Briony Green

On Sunday I spoke about creativity and called my talk, 'A Commissioning for Creativity', or 'Creativity is good, glorifies God, and we should go for it!'

I spoke first about God's priority on creativity and suggested that we have undervalued creativity. At the end of the meeting we spent some time repenting of this.

Next I talked about the power of creativity to communicate, to help us in worship, and as the essence of culture which shapes the way that people around us think.

Finally I addressed two different groups of people - firstly the 'creative sceptics' whom I encouraged to remember that we are a part of a body, and that we are all made in the image of a creative God. Secondly I spoke to those who do feel that they are creative or that God has spoken to them about creativity, and encouraged them to push into what God has for them, to take risks, to dream big, and to look for a commissioning from God.

For discussion:

In small groups this week you might like to think about the following questions:

  1. What does it mean to be creative?
  2. Before Sunday did you consider yourself to be creative? How about now?
  3. What particularly struck or challenged you from Sunday's talk? Is there a way we can help each other to grow in these things?
